postheadericon 14 Days Left!

I can't believe we've made it 6 weeks Post-Op so far!  It actually seems to have gone by fast, thank God!  Exactly 2 more weeks until her follow-up appointment.  Hopefully she'll get the go ahead to bust out of the crate at that appointment.  I think she'll also get X-rays taken at that appointment and I'm going to try to get a copy of them so I can post a picture of her bionic knee!

As our British friends would say, Riley's getting a little bit "cheeky" in her crate!  No, she's being good...just has to let out a few barks and whines every so often to let us know she's still in there and is being cruelly forgotten about!  :)

postheadericon Mr. Chewy Rocks!

I'll admit, I had never even heard of MrChewy.com until I got an e-mail from them asking us to review their company/service.  They mainly sell pet food, but also sell treats, toys, potty pads, and flea and tick medicine.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that they sold Riley's brand of food (Canidae).  Their prices are competitive to other online food sellers and is about the same price as my local Care-A-Lot Pets store's price once tax is added in for Care-A-Lot.  They offer free shipping on orders over $49, which is fairly easy to get to if you're stocking up on dog food.

"Wait, what?  More food for me?  Hooray!!"

I had been wanting to get Riley some Zuke's Dog Treats for a long time (practically for the whole 2.5 years I've had her, but I never broke down and actually bought them), so I ordered her a pack of those to get my total to $49 to get the free shipping (I had a coupon code to use to do my review, but it didn't include shipping).  But, for a 35 lb bag of dog food, the shipping was only going to cost $4.95, which isn't bad when you consider that they didn't charge for tax because I live in a different state than their company.

I placed my order on Wednesday, November 23rd, and was surprised to receive it on Saturday, the 26th.  I figured that with Thanksgiving being the 24th, it might take an extra day or two to get here.

I had just bought Riley a 35 lb bag of dog food at Care-A-Lot a week or two before I ordered this new bag.  Her bag from Care-A-Lot expires in March of 2012, so I was hoping the one from Mr. Chewy would have a bit longer of a shelf life so it wouldn't go bad in the time it takes Riley to eat 70 lbs of food (gosh, that seems like a lot!).  I was pleased to see that the expiration date on this new bag of food from Mr. Chewy expires in September of 2012. Wahoo!

The "goods."  Oh, and Riley is completely in love with the Zuke's treats (must smell good to her--they stink to me!).

All in all, I would have to recommend Mr. Chewy.  They have an option that if you sign up for a recurring shipping schedule, you get free shipping for life.  I don't quite keep track of how long it takes Riley to eat a bag of dog food, but I may try it in the future (after I figure out how long it takes her to eat a 35 lb bag of dog food--I have two bags sitting in my kitchen right now because my food container only holds 30 lbs of food at a time!).  I'm assuming that if you want to switch brands later on, they'll allow you to or if you need to cancel your schedule (like if your dog should die or something) you can.  You would have to check into that before you set up your schedule.

But, as long as you don't live in Pennsylvania, there's no tax.  Plus, you save yourself a trip to the store and lugging a bag of dog food in and out of your car!  And if you set up a delivery schedule, you won't all of a sudden realize you're out of dog food and have to make an emergency trip to the pet store.  There are also over 70 brands of dog food--some of them may not be carried in a store near you, so you have a lot of options.

postheadericon Physical Therapy Flop

Riley usually does well during her physical therapy.  It isn't painful to her and she's still really flexible and muscular.  She lets me flex and extend her leg, no problem.  She's supposed to have it done for 10 minutes at a time...she gets a little silly after about 6 minutes and decides it's time to roach around on her back and get a belly rub...and greet me (as if she hasn't just been spending time with me).

No worries...she's on a leash.  I'm sitting on it.

 Doing well!

Oh no...here we go!  I can't help but laugh...I will be such a bad parent if I ever have human kids!

Now it's time to visit with Momma...

Oh my gosh...on her hind legs!!!!!  I'm pretty sure that's a no-no...

Even more excitement happened outside in the backyard yesterday...  It was dark (only like 5:00 yet dark as everything...sigh) and I had a flashlight in my hand and her leash.  Riley was intent on sniffing this one spot in the yard--like nose straight in the ground sniffing--and I dragged her away from it and back onto the patio where there's a water bowl.  She hasn't been drinking a whole lot of water, so I refresh the water outside a couple of times a day and encourage her to drink it.  She walked behind my back so I went to switch the leash to my other hand to straighten it out just as Riley decided she needed to make her way back over to that wonderful-smelling spot in the yard...pulled the leash right out of my hand and she trotted on over to the spot in the yard about 20 feet away.

Luckily she only trotted and didn't go running or sprinting over there and luckily she also didn't realize that I wasn't holding the leash anymore.  I told her to stay and went over to her and stepped on her leash, then picked it up.  I could just envision all the dollar signs--failed surgery, another surgery, 8 more weeks of recovery time/crate rest, etc!!

All seems to be well with her leg though.  I can hardly even see the scar where she had her leg cut open and she's bearing full weight on both legs equally all the time, no limping or any signs she ever even had a problem with her leg or knee (except for the lack of fur on the leg--they shaved her bald!).  Her fur is starting to grow back though and is growing over the barely-visible incision nicely.  She is nice and quiet in her crate most of the time and seems sort of resigned to it or used to it now.  She's not by any means thrilled to be confined to the crate 23 hours a day (that other hour [or probably actually less than that] includes potty breaks and 2 physical therapy sessions a day).

Oh, and plus she got a new orthopedic dog bed that fits her new crate and a new KONG Ballistic toy that is surprisingly still all in one piece!

postheadericon Play Bowing...

Riley and Chloe got to sort of play this morning.  Riley was in her crate barking at Chloe and play bowing and Chloe was outside of Riley's crate barking and play bowing.  It was a bit noisy, but cute at the same time!

postheadericon Crates are Boring!

Riley says to tell all her "furiends" that crates are boring and to bust out of one as soon as you get an opportunity (her opportunity just won't present itself for another 5 weeks)!!  I took some of her kibble, wet it, stuffed it inside a green Kong-type squirrel dude toy, and froze it, then gave it to her to keep her busy...the crazy dog decided she wanted to hide it in her crate instead...

video
Trying to hide it in her dog bed...  We're beginning our 3rd week of crate rest.  She will hopefully get sprung from the crate on December 14th, after her follow-up appointment at the surgeon's office.

She is doing so very well.  A little too well...she tried to take off after a bird this afternoon outside but she was on her leash, so she just got to the end of her 6 foot leash and then had to stop.  Bummer!  :)  Her leg is looking great!  I've posted a fairly grainy picture of her incision, so just use your imagination.  Her PT is going well.  She usually lasts the whole 10 minutes of therapy, unless of course, she's being all riled up and wanting to roach around on the carpet during therapy...sigh.

You can see a little bit where her incision was and her fur is growing back in now!

Oh, and today, I renewed Riley's Therapy Dogs International registration so she can make visits in 2012!

postheadericon We Have a Winner!

We have a winner for the Awkward Family Pet Photos giveaway!  The winner is:

Comment number 8--Barbara from If I Didn't Have a Sense of Humor!  (I know this looks rigged, but I swear that's the number that came up the first time--Riley just won a toy over on Barbara's blog last week).  I know Barbara will definitely enjoy the humor in this book!

In other news, Riley has been doing very well.  She's not overly happy to be in her crate, but she's dealing with it.  She's sleeping right now.  She and Chloe crossed paths yesterday when I failed to put Chloe in the dining room when I took Riley out (Chloe was asleep under some blankets--who knew she would get up and come to see Riley!).  They sniffed each others' butts and Riley put her paw up on Chloe wanting to play with her.  I guess that's a good sign!

Her physical therapy is still going well, she's super flexible still.  It was super windy here last night and I kept waking up in the night, but Riley slept right through it (or at least she didn't want to get up and go out...smart dog...too windy and cold for that!).

Here is a short video we took of me doing Riley's physical therapy with her!

Sorry the video is so dark.  As you can see, she's pretty flexible right now (just as flexible as she was before surgery)...yay!!

postheadericon Wanna Be a Winner?

So, after the Awkward Family Pet Photos post yesterday, the publishers have decided to give away a copy to one of our readers!  I know some other blogs were doing this too, so you can double or triple your chances to win one!

If you want to win a copy of the book (see yesterday's review for more information), just leave a comment on this post telling us what kind of animal your very first pet was!  Mine was a goldfish...my parents really weren't animal people when we were kids!  :)

The contest will end at midnight EST on Friday, November 4th, so get your comment in by then!  The winner will be chosen at random (by Random.org), so everyone has an equal chance at winning!  It should be fun to see what everybody's first pet was!  And if you have never had a pet, just say so (but I don't think you'd be reading a dog blog if you weren't a "pet person").

Riley is still doing well.  Her physical therapy (flexing and extending her leg) is going great and she's still super flexible in her joint.  I don't really see a post-surgery difference in flexibility, so that's super!

Riley snuggled up to her new Monkey Mark toy she won on Miss Barbara's blog!

Look, "Lucifur" is back for a visit!!  I have to put Chloe in the dining room while I take Riley out to potty...so they don't intermingle and play with each other.

postheadericon Well, That Was Awkward...

We got this little gem of a book in the mail the other day and just had to share it with everyone!  It's called "Awkward Family Pet Photos" and it hits store shelves today.  It is hysterical!!

Riley reading the back cover...what could be more awkward than a dog reading an Awkward Family Pet Photos book??

It seems to keep her interest!

I just love the picture on the lower left-hand corner.  Do those people not have smooshed faces like their dog??

I don't know whether to tell you that the pictures or the captions were funnier!  There were some hilarious stories from Veterinarians and stories "behind the awkwardness" from the people that were in the pictures.  Most of the time, it was children who wrote in about how their parents made them pose with their pet pig or something like that.  Too funny!  The book is available today in bookstores and on Amazon.com and I highly recommend it as a Christmas present for any pet lovers out there...it is hysterical!  Check out the AFPP Book website for more information.

And...to make this post a little more awkward...here is a picture of Riley's leg now that her staples are out!  The vet said her incision looks really good and she was acting her same old crazy self today at the vet's office...sigh.  She saw her BFF, Brooke, and didn't feel the need to pee for her today!!
